Liposuction Overview
What Are the Benefits of Liposuction?
Liposuction has numerous benefits for patients. It’s an excellent way to help patients who are struggling with persistent areas of fat that simply won’t go away with diet or exercise. Because it’s such a versatile procedure, it can help sculpt and refine numerous areas of the body.
After a liposuction procedure, patients will be more pleased with their appearance. They’ll feel more comfortable wearing any type of clothing because of the aesthetic improvements including restored balance, proportion and contour. This may even translate to improved mental well-being, helping the patient feel better overall.
Liposuction can also be combined with other procedures for a full-body transformation. Many patients may benefit from a breast lift, body lift, or tummy tuck at the same time to completely renovate their appearance.
Finally, the fat obtained through liposuction can sometimes be used to help pump up other parts of the body that are lacking in volume. For example, many patients like to use their excess fat for a Brazilian butt lift procedure (safely reshaping and enhancing the buttock).
Is Liposuction Right for You?
The great news is that many men and women can benefit from liposuction. To be a good candidate for surgery, patients should:
- Be somewhat close to their ideal weight. Morbidly obese patients and not good candidates and might have to consider bariatric (weight loss) surgery prior to liposuction.
- Have stubborn deposits of fat that won’t go away with diet or exercise.
- Be healthy enough for surgery (while liposuction is an outpatient treatment, for patient comfort we usually recommend “twilight” anesthesia).
Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure, so patients should not consider this treatment if their goal is to lower the number on the scale. To know for sure if they are candidates for liposuction, patients can schedule a consultation with Dr. Herbstman at one of his offices.
What Is the Cost of Liposuction?
There is no standard cost for liposuction, as it’s a highly individualized procedure. Some patients may just want to tone up their belly, while others might want to work on their arms, legs, and hips. Because of this, Dr. Herbstman can estimate a price after seeing the patient at an initial consultation.
To assist patients in handling the cost of surgery we offer CareCredit, a type of medical financing that allows patients to cover the cost of the procedure in full. Then, they’ll just have to make affordable monthly payments for a set term (often at zero interest)— For some patients this eases the stress of having to pay for everything at once.
What Is the Recovery After Liposuction?
After liposuction is complete, patients will need to rest at home for a few days. They’ll have several small incisions in the treatment area, so it’s important not to overdo it and disturb these. Our Enhanced Recovery After Surgery program helps to speed recovery and minimize discomfort and swelling, Patients will also be discharged in a compression garment to help the area heal and keep the skin supported. The garment should be worn continuously for a few weeks. Generally, most patients get back on their feet and look great in one to two weeks. However, they won’t see their final results until about the six-month mark, as the body needs time to fully heal.
