October was a very busy month at Contemporary Plastic Surgery. Breast reconstruction is an important part of our New Jersey practice, so we started Breast Cancer Awareness month off right with our 15th year of Team Contemporary’s participation in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. At 150 strong, we had a great day at the race celebrating our survivors and their families.
Congrats to Patti F. for another top finish! Thanks to the efforts of all our team members and staff, we are proud to have raised more than $11,000! We were honored to be the largest doctor/hospital team for the fourth consecutive year.
Speaking of honors, I was pleased to have been presented with the Susan G. Komen “Warrior” statue by Nancy Healy, the longtime president of the Central New Jersey Komen foundation. The Warrior is loaned annually to a member of the community who has supported the foundation over the years. We are displaying the work in our East Brunswick office reception area.
On October 15, we celebrated the third annual worldwide Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day (BRA Day). Together with the St. Peter’s University Hospital Breast Care Team, we had a fabulous event at the CARES building location. The event featured a bra decorating contest with more than 25 fantastic, creative entries, making the judging for top entrants quite a challenge.
I was privileged to give a presentation on current techniques in breast reconstruction, including the latest “gummy bear” implant reconstruction, fat grafting, and other tissue techniques, followed by a lively Q&A session. A great time was had by all as we highlighted the importance of breast reconstruction in the comprehensive care of the breast cancer patient. We look forward to next year’s event with more activities to come including a fashion show featuring some fabulous survivors.
