Contemporary Plastic Surgery helps patients achieve clearer, softer, and more radiant skin through a combination of advanced treatments. Two of the non-invasive and effective options we provide are laser resurfacing and BroadBand Light therapy.

Most patients are good candidates for BroadBand Light therapy, which is a photo facial that can address the majority of their cosmetic concerns.  We offer laser resurfacing for patients whose aesthetic issues require a more intensive approach to care.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Overview

BroadBand Light Therapy (BBL™)

With BroadBand Light therapy, Contemporary Plastic Surgery offers patients several aesthetic solutions that previously required more powerful laser technology. Our practice uses the BBL system by Sciton®, a leader in the industry. This device allows us to provide patients with a broad range of aesthetic treatments.

How BroadBand Light Therapy Works

While BroadBand Light can provide results similar to the effects of laser resurfacing, BBL relies on a different mode of operation. It uses intense pulsed light — a broad spectrum of visible and infrared light — to target selected layers of the skin. This helps remove unwanted features of the tissue and stimulate the regeneration of cells. Different device settings can address different types of concerns, from excessive pigmentation to unwanted hair.

Treatment Options

Skin damage and blemishes. Contemporary Plastic Surgery can reduce the visibility of broken blood vessels, rosacea, acne, brown spots, red spots, and other pigmented and vascular lesions. Treatments target the unwanted melanin and tiny vessels that cause the skin to appear damaged or blemished, giving patients a smoother and healthier appearance.

Fine lines and wrinkles. Marketed under the name “Forever Young BBL™,” this mode of treatment can help correct sun damage and prevent signs of aging, two of the common goals of more aggressive laser resurfacing treatments. By delivering BroadBand Light to different layers of tissue, BBL promotes changes in the skin’s tone and texture. Our patients typically see noticeable improvement after a single treatment, have no downtime, and enjoy long-lasting benefits.  For optimal results, we recommend a series of 3- 4 treatments.

Hair removal. Contemporary Plastic Surgery uses the “Forever Bare” mode of BroadBand Light therapy to eliminate unwanted hair permanently. Unlike other hair reduction treatments, Forever Bare delivers low-fluence energy pulses rather than an application that covers the entire area. This keeps the skin at a safer and more comfortable temperature.

What to Expect With BroadBand Light Therapy

During your treatment, we will spread a special numbing gel and a gel for the BBL applicator on the treatment area. Most patients choose to focus on the face, head, or neck. Since the BBL device uses intense pulsed light, you will wear protective glasses throughout the process for your safety and comfort.

You can return to normal daily activities immediately following your visit. You may notice redness in the areas that have been treated, which can last for several days up to two weeks. Once the redness fades, you should see clearer, more youthful-looking skin.

Fraxel® Laser Resurfacing

Traditional laser resurfacing treatments affect the entire surface of the skin and require a lengthy recovery period. Fraxel differentiates itself by effectively renewing the skin’s texture and appearance with minimal downtime.

Fraxel can enhance the skin of nearly any feature of the body including the face, chest, and hands. Women and men who visit us benefit from Fraxel’s effectiveness and versatility. It treats a range of skin conditions that include:

  • Sun spots, freckles, and uneven pigmentation.
  • Fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Acne scars.
  • Poor skin tone and texture.
  • Thickened surgical scars.
  • Stretch marks.

During your initial consultation with Contemporary Plastic Surgery, we will perform a detailed analysis to determine whether Fraxel or an alternative skin care treatment is best suited for your needs. We also provide state of the art physician-strength skin care products supervised by our skin care specialist to help you maintain the benefits of your treatment.

How Fraxel Works

Instead of affecting the entire surface of the skin like other laser resurfacing treatments, the Fraxel laser applies tiny, pinpoint columns of energy. By targeting alternating areas of the tissue, the skin is able to heal more quickly. The laser does not harm the surface of the skin and instead penetrates deeper where it can remove imperfections, improve existing collagen, and increase the production of new collagen. This results in clear skin that is firmer, smoother, and healthier looking.

What to Expect

Fraxel laser resurfacing is as convenient as it is effective. Performed by our nurse practitioner in collaboration with Dr. Herbstman, a board-certified plastic surgeon, this simple in-office procedure requires only a topical anesthetic. Most patients can resume their normal activities on the same day as their treatment. A series of 3-5 treatments with Fraxel can provide improvement to the skin that lasts for years.
