Susan G. Komen will pay tribute to Dr. Robert Herbstman, a plastic surgeon from New Jersey.
At its annual dinner gala on May 14, 2015, the Susan G. Komen Foundation presented its Corporate Leadership Award to Dr. Robert A. Herbstman (www.cosmeticsurgerynj.com), a plastic surgeon whose New Jersey practice has contributed over $100,000 to fund the hunt for a cure for breast cancer.
Dr. Herbstman annually organizes and sponsors a team to participate in the Susan G. Komen Central and South New Jersey Race for the Cure. Race organizers say the team has been a fixture at the event for 16 years.
“I enjoy celebrating the success of our survivors,” Dr. Herbstman says of his commitment. “What motivates me is seeing the positive impact breast reconstruction provides to those on the journey through the recovery process to health and well-being.”
The Komen organization will honor Dr. Herbstman at its annual PINK! gala dinner at the Hamilton Manor.
“Driven by his patients, Dr. Herbstman has been a great partner and friend to the affiliate for many years,” says Sally Sheperdson, executive director of Susan G. Komen Central and South Jersey. “It is inspiring to see him lead a team of his staff and patients on race day who have all come together because of their commitment to the fight against breast cancer.”
At last year’s event, Dr. Herbstman’s practice fielded a team of nearly 150, again earning the award for the largest group affiliated with a doctor or hospital.
Recognized as an authority on breast reconstruction, the New Jersey board-certified plastic surgeon says cancer survivors are increasingly aware of the options they have following mastectomy. That includes a choice of the same advanced breast implants used in augmentation procedures.
Dr. Herbstman says he appreciates the work the Susan G. Komen affiliate performs and the spirit of the annual Race for the Cure, which this year is scheduled for Oct. 4 at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson Township.
“This is a positive, upbeat event at which wonderful, long-lasting relationships are formed,” Dr. Herbstman says. “People come back year after year to be part of such an inspiring environment, and both our staff and patients look forward to getting together to support our breast cancer survivors. We’ve developed deep attachments to our patients. This is about establishing relationships that last a lifetime.”
