Full, shapely breasts can make a woman feel more self-confident, well-proportioned, and attractive. However, the aging process, pregnancy, and weight fluctuations can all contribute to changes in breast shape and volume. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Herbstman restores youthful fullness, firmness and contour to the breasts through breast augmentation with implants. With this procedure, he has renewed a sense of attractiveness and self-confidence for hundreds of women in New Jersey.

Options for Personalized Results

During your in-depth, initial consultation, Dr. Herbstman will meet with you personally to explain the procedure, answer your questions, and thoroughly review available breast enhancement options, including the breast implant choices he offers. When you visit his practice, he will help you evaluate your choices, including:

  • Incision location: In order to minimize visible scarring, Dr. Herbstman places the incisions in an inconspicuous location such as below the breast in the breast crease, around the areola, or in the armpit.
  • Implant material: Cohesive silicone gel offers a remarkably natural look and feel and is the most popular implant material choice for our New Jersey patients who are at least 22 years old. We also offer saline implants, which can be inserted through small incisions and filled after they are placed.
  • Implant placement: The most common placement for breast implants is behind the chest muscles, especially when the patient has very little of her own breast tissue. Patients can also choose to have their implants placed in front of the chest muscles.

Mary Ann’s Breast Augmentation Story

Meet Mary Ann, who consulted with Dr. Herbstman for breast augmentation after deciding she wanted to look better. “I was never ashamed of who I was or how I stood,” she says. “I just felt I needed that little extra.”

Dr. Herbstman will recommend the options that are most suited to your unique anatomy and aesthetic goals, as well as your personal preferences. New Jersey patients with significant sagging might also require a breast lift to attain the results they desire.

What to Expect

Dr. Herbstman performs breast augmentation surgery in his fully accredited, onsite surgical suite. Typically performed as an outpatient procedure while the patient is under twilight anesthesia, breast augmentation surgery is complete in approximately 1 to 2 hours. To provide the most natural-looking results, Dr. Herbstman uses advanced surgical techniques to reduce recovery time and minimize visible scarring.

After breast augmentation surgery, New Jersey patients can expect to experience some soreness for several days. Dr. Herbstman utilizes EXPAREL®, a safe and effective pain reduction system to minimize post-operative pain. Exparel is the only single-dose pain killer proven to control pain for up to 72 hours, reducing or eliminating the need for opioid requirements, catheters, and pumps. Swelling from breast augmentation surgery may take several weeks to completely subside. In most cases, the scars fade considerably within the first few months after surgery and become barely noticeable once completely healed.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Should I get breast augmentation or breast lift surgery?

It’s common for patients to know they’d like to improve the appearance of their breasts but to be unsure which procedure is right for them. Breast augmentation increases the size of the breasts, but it does not address sagging as a breast lift does. Dr. Herbstman evaluates your breasts and makes a recommendation of which procedure will give you the best results. It’s very common for New Jersey patients to get a combination augmentation-lift procedure to address both volume and sagging.

  • What's the best incision location?

The location of your incisions is a personal choice, and each option has its advantages and limitations. The periareolar incision, along the lower border of the areola, gives Dr. Herbstman access for implant placement, particularly when the procedure is combined with breast lift (mastopexy) surgery. The inframammary incision, in the fold beneath the breast, also offers excellent access and avoids the nipple and areola. This will have less of a chance of altering sensation to the nipple and is unlikely to interfere with future breast feeding capability. Studies have shown that risk of scar tissue formation around the implant may be lower when the procedure is performed through the inframammary approach. The transaxillary incision, in the armpit area, leaves no scar on the breast, but offers less access. No matter which you choose, Dr. Herbstman makes incisions as inconspicuous and fine as possible, leaving a scar that heals and fades quickly until it is practically invisible.

  • Can I breastfeed after getting breast augmentation?

This is a common concern among New Jersey women who are planning to have children in the future. Getting breast implants should not affect your ability to breastfeed. It is important, however, to communicate your plans to Dr. Herbstman during your consultation. That way he can plan a procedure with incisions that do not disrupt your milk ducts.

  • Do breast implants affect mammograms?

Technicians who perform mammograms are trained to provide screening for women with breast implants. You should use a radiology facility where technicians have experience with patients who have had breast augmentation, and make sure to tell the technician you have breast implants. The technician may take alternate or extra images of your breasts to ensure a good screening. Also, implants placed under the muscle are less likely to obscure mammograms than those placed above the muscle.

  • Can I combine breast augmentation with other procedures?

Yes. In addition to breast lift surgery, it’s quite common to pair breast augmentation with body contouring procedures such as liposuction and tummy tuck surgery. When performed in conjunction with breast augmentation, these procedures can yield transformative results that reinvigorate your entire silhouette. Combining multiple procedures into a single surgery is a safe and efficient way to give patients the results they want, particularly in the hands of our qualified specialists.
