Patients who are unhappy with their sagging belly may benefit from a tummy tuck. Also known as an abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck works to cut away excess fat, tighten the abdominal muscles, and remove excess skin to create a toned, slimmed belly. In particular, this procedure is an excellent choice for both men and women who have lost a lot of weight or are struggling with the changes aging brings about.

What Are the Benefits of a Tummy Tuck?

There can be both cosmetic and medical benefits of a tummy tuck. Cosmetically, patients will enjoy a flatter stomach with less drooping skin and better muscle tone. This will help them feel more confident in their bodies, especially when donning a swimsuit or other belly-revealing clothing.

The medical benefits of a Tummy Tuck can include:

Correction of Ventrical Hernia Icon
Correction of a ventral hernia, which is when the intestines break through the abdominal wall and create a sack of tissue.
Correction of stress urinary incontinence.
Correction of stress urinary incontinence, which is when there’s too much pressure on the bladder, causing a person to pee at inopportune times.
Decrease in back pain icon.
Decrease in back pain, which can happen if the stomach muscles are too weak (especially after pregnancy).
Improved posture icon
Improved posture, which can also happen because the abdominal muscles are too weak.

Is a Tummy Tuck Right for You?

Many people can benefit from a tummy tuck at one of Dr. Herbstman’s offices.

A tummy tuck is a great choice for those who:

Excess skin in belly icon
Have loose, sagging, or excess skin in the belly.
Recently lost alot of weight icon
Recently lost a lot of weight and can’t seem to flatten their tummy like they want.
Unhappy with changes in belly icon
Have gotten older and are unhappy with the natural changes to their belly.
Given birth and unhappy with appearance icon
Have given birth and are unhappy with the stretched-out appearance of their stomach.
Stretched abdominal muscles icon
Have separated or stretched abdominal muscles (usually after being pregnant).
Don't smoke icon
Are healthy enough to tolerate surgery and don’t smoke (as smoking impairs recovery).

Patients should keep in mind that a tummy tuck is not a weight-loss procedure. While some fat will be removed during the surgery, it’s minimal — patients shouldn’t even notice a change on the scale afterward. Because of that, patients need to be at or close to their ideal weight before the surgery.

To know for sure if they are candidates, patients are urged to schedule a consultation with Dr. Herbstman. Even if a tummy tuck isn’t the right choice, Dr. Herbstman can devise a treatment plan that perfectly meets every patient’s needs.

Dr. Herbstman’s Approach to the Tummy Tuck Process

Significant fluctuation in weight can leave you with excess tissue around your belly, weakened abdominal muscles, and stretch marks that cause you to feel self-conscious. A tummy tuck procedure can correct each of these issues, restoring you to greater confidence in your physique.

For those who have never had a tummy tuck, the process may seem overwhelming. Dr. Herbstman is here to walk you through each step of the journey, extending kind, compassionate care along the way. He will consider your goals, answer your questions, and develop a personalized treatment plan that you can genuinely feel excited about. You can trust Dr. Herbstman to be not only a skilled surgeon but, together with his staff, be there to support you throughout your tummy tuck process.

Initial Consultation

One of the reasons why patients trust our practice for their tummy tuck needs is the level of personal attention Dr. Herbstman extends starting from the first appointment. Dr. Herbstman will carefully explain the ins and outs of the tummy tuck procedure, reviewing how to prepare and what to expect during recovery with our Enhanced Recovery After Surgery program. All questions and concern are addressed by Dr. Herbstman and his staff. The goal is for you to feel fully informed and completely confident about your surgery choice.

Additionally, Dr. Herbstman will perform a physical assessment and take your medical history. This information determines whether you are a good candidate for a safe and successful procedure.

Pre Operative Visit

This visit takes place 1-2 weeks before your procedure. Dr. Herbstman and the nursing staff will review the procedure once again and make sure any remaining questions or concerns are answered. We instruct you in all the steps in our Enhanced Recovery Program to make sure you are prepared to recover safely and quickly after surgery. As part of this process, nutritional support products will be provided to you and all prescriptions will be reviewed and prescribed to your pharmacy. All before preparations and after care instructions are reviewed and you are encouraged (but not required) to bring your support family member or friend to the visit. We want to make sure you leave the visit confident and excited for the procedure.

The Day of Your Procedure

On the day of your surgery, Dr. Herbstman will greet you and answer any last-minute questions you might have. He is there with you throughout the entire anesthesia process as well. Patient comfort is our top concern, and our practice strives to deliver a very comfortable, supportive surgical experience.

The individual steps in the procedure can vary from patient to patient, but generally, Dr. Herbstman will:

  • Make an incision below the bikini line so that it is easy to conceal.
  • Pull the ab muscles back together, giving you a firmer midsection.
  • Use invisible sutures to close up the surgical area.
  • Apply a long-lasting anesthetic to minimize pain for three to four days.
  • Provide a support garment to wear after surgery.
  • Employ our ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) program to get you help speed the healing and recovery process so you are safely back on your feet and active as quickly as possible.

Tummy Tuck Procedure Walkthrough

What Is the Recovery After a Tummy Tuck Like?

Because a tummy tuck involves incisions in the abdomen, patients should expect a downtime of around one to three weeks. This means they won’t be able to go to work or complete their normal routines during this time. Instead, they should stay home and rest. As soon as possible, patients should try to walk around, as this helps the healing process. However, they should not perform strenuous exercise for several weeks, as this can rip open the incisions.

Patients may also have drains in place to help remove fluid from the abdomen. For some patients, Dr. Herbstman also recommends an abdominal pressure garment to keep everything in place as it heals.

What Is the Cost of a Tummy Tuck?

The cost of a tummy tuck is highly variable, so it’s hard to quote a price without an initial consultation. In addition, many people like combining a tummy tuck with other procedures, such as a breast lift, so this can also affect the cost. The best way to know for sure what the price of a tummy tuck will be is to see Dr. Herbstman in person so he can perform an examination and make a personalized recommendation.

Patients will also have access to CareCredit, a medical payment program that can help create manageable monthly payments. This way, patients won’t have to put their cosmetic dreams on hold while they save up for the cost of the procedure.
