Body

Tummy tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, enables our surgeons in New Jersey to flatten the abdominal region by tightening the underlying muscles, removing excess fat, and trimming away extra skin. The procedure is ideal if you're in relatively good shape and are bothered by loose or hanging skin in the abdominal region. The procedure is very effective for women who have weakened muscles due to multiple pregnancies and men and women whose skin has lost its youthful elasticity due to weight loss.

Dr. Robert Herbstman and Dr. Pedro Vieira take a personal approach to each patient's care. See the difference when you visit our practice in East Brunswick and Red Bank. To learn more about abdominoplasty, request a consultation online or call us at (732) 254-1919.

Your Consultation

Are You a Candidate?

You're likely a candidate for a tummy tuck if:
  • You are significantly bothered by excess sagging, loose skin around your abdomen caused by past pregnancy, weight loss, aging, or even genetics.
  • You have stretched, separated abdominal muscles that bulge outward.
  • You are in generally good health.
  • You are at or near a healthy, stable weight.

Your private, one-on-one consultation with Dr. Herbstman or Dr. Vieira is an important time to discuss all aspects of your experience — from your medical history to your lifestyle and aesthetic goals — to help you both effectively work together to create the results you want.

During your consultation, your surgeon performs a thorough physical examination of your abdomen to evaluate factors such as your skin quality, muscle tone, and the amount of unwanted fat present. He also takes measurements to better understand your proportions and ensure an even, natural-looking result.

Our surgeons emphasize the importance of open, candid communication between doctor and patient during the consultation. It's imperative that you share your honest expectations and relevant history with us so we can be sure your surgery goes as smoothly as possible and your results are just as beautiful and long-lasting as you've imagined.

At the end of your consultation, our staff provides you with a written quote that reflects your specific surgical plan. We also explain financing options. Although you may schedule your procedure at your consultation, we understand plastic surgery is a major event and it's common to need some time to make a decision. You can feel free to discuss your options with your loved ones before booking your tummy tuck.

What to Expect

For most patients, tummy tucks are performed as outpatient procedures in the comfort and safety of our on-site surgical center. To begin a tummy tuck, your surgeon places an incision in the lowest part of the abdomen just above the pubic hairline. Patients should be aware that this incision leaves a permanent scar. However, by utilizing advanced surgical techniques and strategic placement of the incision, Dr. Herbstman and Dr. Vieira are able to minimize the visibility of the post-procedural scar. In most cases, the scar can be easily covered by a bikini.

After he creates the incision, your surgeon removes excess fat and tightens the abdominal muscles. He then stretches the skin downward, pulling it taut across the altered muscles and trimming the extra skin. We often use liposuction as part of a tummy tuck for the removal of unwanted fat. Liposuction can also be used on other areas of the body to complement the tummy tuck result. Women who choose a tummy tuck may also elect to have breast augmentation to enhance their breasts.

Depending on the specifics of your surgery, you can expect to take between 1 and 3 weeks off work. Although you'll need to rest at home to allow your body to effectively heal, it's also important to engage in light activity, such as walking, as soon as you can. This prevents the formation of blood clots and often helps you feel better, too.

Once you're fully healed, you can enjoy a flatter, better contoured abdomen indefinitely, provided you stick to healthy diet and exercise habits and avoid significant weight fluctuations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need liposuction or a tummy tuck?

It's common for patients to know they dislike the look of their abdomens but to be unsure what procedure can help. Liposuction only removes fat. If you have stubborn fat on your midsection and skin that is fairly elastic (meaning it will "bounce back" after the fat is gone), liposuction may be for you. But if you also have stretched, loose skin or bulging abdominal muscles, then a tummy tuck may be a better choice.

Can I have children after a tummy tuck?

It's perfectly safe to become pregnant after a tummy tuck, but our surgeons typically advise against it. This is because the changes that a woman's body undergoes during pregnancy can significantly alter the results of a tummy tuck, potentially necessitating an additional surgery in the future to ensure your results are maintained. If you're considering a tummy tuck but aren't sure if you'd like to have more children after surgery, we may be able to recommend an alternative procedure. We are happy to talk through family planning issues during your consultation and come up with a treatment plan that suits your lifestyle.

Will exercise give me the same results?

Although good diet and exercise habits can go a long way toward giving you the body you want — and keeping you healthy — they can't do anything to reduce the presence of loose, hanging skin. Only surgical excision can permanently remove this skin and restore a taut, smooth contour to your abdomen. For this reason, we have many tummy tuck patients who are in excellent shape.

When can I resume exercise after a tummy tuck?

After 1 to 3 weeks, you should be feeling well enough to return to work and most daily activities. You can begin gradually returning to exercise at this time, starting with walking and low-impact activities. It's important not to overexert the abdominal area during the healing process, so strength and core exercises such as crunches should be avoided. Over the course of about 6 to 8 weeks, you can resume full activity. We are happy to clear you for different levels of exercise during your follow-up appointments as we monitor your progress.
